Florence is very walkable and not overwhelming in size, which makes choosing a base location very easy. The city is so walkable! We recommend sticking to the city center rather than going further afield so that you can do just that.
And I certainly wouldn’t complain if I had an extra reason to walk past the Duomo in the evening when the crowds are thinned out and the building is lit up.
